End of the Year Event!
Local Author - Amy DeWeerd-Macris
(2 credited hours)
(Dinner to follow presentation)
Author & illustrator Amy DeWeerd-Macris entered the field of children’s publishing after teaching kindergarten for over 20 years. She has written three books to date. Her first book, Ready To Learn, was co-authored with child psychologist, Dr. Jean Shub. This book, written for educators and parents, uses storytelling to help shape the behaviors of children. Ms. DeWeerd didn’t leave the world of non-fiction writing when she shifted to children’s literature. In fact, both of her picture books are true stories based on a local farm in Kinderhook, NY. On the surface, these stories share the simple joys of farm life and animal antics, but within each story, there is a subtle but meaningful message for readers of all ages. Scooter and Sophie tells the story of a friendship between a calf and a lamb highlighting the fact that differences can enrich our friendships rather than detract from them. How a Mother Loves is the story of mother animals and all the unique ways they care for their young, including adopted babies on the farm! When Amy isn’t writing or painting, she can be found gardening, visiting the farm, or snuggling Lily Belle, her Maine Coon cat. Amy will demonstrate how to use these books when teaching.
